Auto Quit

Apps you choose quit on their own after a few minutes in the background, and you can have apps quit when you close their last window or quit a whole group at once.

Quit after idle

An app you choose quits once it has spent its idle time out of the front. The clock starts when you switch away from the app (or when it opens behind another one) and stops whenever you bring it back to the front. Saiki quits it the normal way, so an app with unsaved work still asks you first.

Choose an app

From the bar:

  1. Type the app's name and select it.
  2. Press ⌘K and open Auto Quit After….
  3. Pick 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes or 15 minutes. The current choice has a check mark.

A small message confirms it, for example "Notes quits after 3 minutes in the background". Once an app is chosen, the same menu has Never, which stops it quitting on its own. See Actions on an app.

Or open Settings → Auto Quit and choose Add App… under Quit After Idle. Pick the app in the window that opens; it starts at 3 minutes.

Change the idle time

Pick another time from ⌘K → Auto Quit After…, or select the app in Settings → Auto Quit → Quit After Idle and press ↵ (Change Time). Each press steps to the next time: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, then back to 1. ⌘⌫ removes the app from the list.

When an app is never quit

Some apps can't be chosen at all. Auto Quit After… isn't offered for them, and Add App… says why:

And at the moment a chosen app would quit, Saiki keeps it running if:

An app kept because it was busy gets a full idle time again from that moment, so it won't quit the instant the music or the call ends.

Quit when the last window closes

Turn on Quit apps when their last window closes on Settings → Auto Quit, in the When the Last Window Closes card. Closing an app's last window then quits it, unless it still shows, plays or records something. It's off to start with, and it needs Saiki's Accessibility permission.

It works the way you'd expect:

Keep Running

Apps in the Keep Running card are never quit when their last window closes. Finder, Saiki and, if your Mac has it, Phone are always there (Always). Choose Add Exception… to add another app; select one you added and press ⌘⌫ to remove it.

Menu bar apps

Menu bar apps stay running when you close their window, even if they show a Dock icon while it's open. To let one quit like any other app, choose Allow a Menu Bar App… in the Menu Bar Apps card and pick it. Saiki refuses an app that isn't a menu bar app, since it already quits on close. ⌘⌫ takes an app off the list.

Quit groups

A quit group is a named set of apps you can quit together, like everything you use for work.

  1. Open Settings → Auto Quit and choose New Group… in the Quit Groups card.
  2. Type a Name, such as Work.
  3. Press ⇥ and type its Apps by name, separated by commas: Slack, Mail, Calendar. The line below shows the apps Saiki matched. Finder and Saiki are always left out.
  4. Press ↵ to save, or esc to cancel.

To quit a group, type quit and its name in the bar, like quit work, and press ↵ on Quit Work. The row shows only while at least one of its apps is running, and lists the ones that are. A card names every app that will quit; ⌘↵ (or Quit 3 Apps) goes ahead, esc cancels. Each app quits normally and asks first if it has unsaved work.

Saiki also has three built-in groups, AI Assistants, Developer Tools and Task Managers, each listed only when you have one of its apps. They can't be changed; make your own instead.

In Settings, select a group of yours and press ↵ (Edit Group) to change it, or ⌘⌫ to delete it. The form has a Delete button too.

Settings

Everything is on Settings → Auto Quit:

NeverNever quit on their own: Finder, Saiki, Phone and background apps, and apps holding a terminal or agent session.

The switch at the top turns all of it off: no app quits on its own, Auto Quit After… leaves ⌘K, and quit groups leave search. Until you choose an app or turn on quitting on close, nothing of Auto Quit runs.
