Bluetooth
See your paired Bluetooth devices with their batteries, connect or disconnect one with ↵, and give your favourites a hotkey of their own.
Bluetooth Devices
Type bluetooth and press ↵ on Bluetooth Devices. Words like airpods, headphones, connect or battery find it too. You can also give it a hotkey on Settings → Hotkeys, in the Commands card.
The view lists every device paired with this Mac in two groups:
- Favorites: your favourite devices, in the order you added them, each with a small star.
- My Devices: everything else, connected devices first, then by name.
Each row shows the device's name, its kind (Headphones, Speaker, Keyboard, Mouse, Trackpad, Game Controller, Phone, Computer or Device), its batteries while it's connected, and its status: Connected or Not Connected, or Connecting…, Disconnecting… and Refreshing… while Saiki works on it. Type in the field to filter the list by name or kind.
The list stays current while the view is open, and stops reading as soon as you close the view or the bar hides.
When the list is empty
- Allow Bluetooth Access: Saiki doesn't have the Bluetooth permission yet. Press ↵ to ask. See The Bluetooth permission.
- Bluetooth is off. Turn it on in Control Center to see your devices.
- No devices are paired with this Mac.
Connect and disconnect
Select a device and press ↵. The footer says what it will do: Connect for a device that isn't connected, Disconnect for one that is. The bar stays open, the row shows the progress, and a small message says when it's done or that it couldn't connect. Double-clicking a row does the same.
A device's ⌘K
| Action | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Connect / Disconnect | ↵ | Connects the device, or disconnects it if it's connected. |
| Refresh Device | ⌘R | Disconnects the device, waits two seconds and connects it again. Useful when headphones or a mouse misbehave. |
| Add to Favorites / Remove from Favorites | ⇧⌘F | Makes it a favourite, or no longer one. |
| Set Hotkey… | Only on a favourite: records a hotkey that connects or disconnects it. | |
| Copy Device Name | ⇧⌘C | Copies its name. |
| Copy Address | Copies its Bluetooth address. | |
| Restart Bluetooth… | Turns Bluetooth off and on again, after a card. |
Batteries
A connected device that reports its battery shows a small gauge with the percent beside it. AirPods show one for each bud and the case (L, R and Case); other devices show one. A level of 15 % or less turns red.
Apple's mice, keyboards and trackpads update with the list. AirPods and other headphones are read at most once a minute, so their levels can lag a little.
Favourites
Make a device a favourite with ⌘K → Add to Favorites (⇧⌘F) in the view. A favourite:
- Is listed first in the view, under Favorites.
- Shows up in the main search when you type two or more letters of its name, as Bluetooth Favorite. Press ↵ on Connect or Disconnect and the bar closes while Saiki connects or disconnects it.
- Can have its own hotkey.
A hotkey for a device
- In the view, select the favourite and press ⌘K.
- Choose Set Hotkey… and press the keys you want.
Or record it on Settings → Bluetooth, in the Favorite Hotkeys card. The hotkey works from anywhere without opening the bar: it connects the device, or disconnects it if it's connected, and a small message says what happened. If the device is no longer paired with this Mac, the message says so.
Removing a favourite also removes its hotkey.
Bluetooth while the Mac sleeps
A closed laptop in a bag can keep grabbing the headphones you're using with your phone. Turn on Turn Bluetooth off while the Mac sleeps on Settings → Bluetooth, and Saiki turns Bluetooth off as the Mac goes to sleep.
With Turn it back on when the Mac wakes on, Bluetooth comes back on when the Mac wakes. Only what Saiki turned off comes back: if Bluetooth was already off when the Mac went to sleep, it stays off. If the Mac was shut down while asleep, Bluetooth comes back on the next time Saiki starts.
The first switch is off to start with; the second is on. Both need the Bluetooth permission.
The Bluetooth permission
Saiki needs macOS's Bluetooth permission to list your devices and to connect and disconnect them. It never asks at launch, only when you ask it to, from any of these:
- The Allow Bluetooth Access row in the Bluetooth Devices view.
- Settings → Bluetooth → Bluetooth access, which shows Allowed, Not asked yet or Turned off.
- Bluetooth on Privacy & Permissions. See Install and permissions.
The first time, macOS shows its own prompt; click Allow. If you turned it off earlier, Saiki opens System Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth so you can turn it on there.
Settings
Everything is on Settings → Bluetooth:
| Card | Rows |
|---|---|
| Access | Bluetooth access: whether the permission is allowed. ↵ asks for it. |
| Favorites | Each favourite with its hotkey (or "No hotkey"). ↵ opens the Bluetooth Devices view, ⌘⌫ removes the favourite. Add a Favorite… opens the view too. |
| Favorite Hotkeys | A hotkey row for each favourite. |
| Sleep | Turn Bluetooth off while the Mac sleeps (off), Turn it back on when the Mac wakes (on). |
The switch at the top turns all of it off: the view closes, favourites leave search, their hotkeys do nothing, and Bluetooth is no longer turned off at sleep.
