Calculator
Type a sum, a conversion, a currency, a date or a time in another city, and the answer appears as a card at the top of the results.
Use it
There's nothing to open. Type into the bar as you would any search, and when what you typed is something the calculator understands, a card shows the question on the left and the answer on the right, with a small label under each side (the two currencies, the two cities, the two units).
Ordinary searches stay searches: safari, iphone 15 or notes never bring up a card. While you're still typing (45+), the card keeps the last complete answer.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| ↵ | Copy Answer, and the bar closes. |
| ⌘↵ | Paste Answer into the app you were in. Your clipboard is put back as it was afterwards. Needs Accessibility. |
| ⌃↵ | Put Answer in Search Bar, so you can keep calculating with it. Not offered for dates, times and true/false answers. |
| ⇧⌘C | Copy Question and Answer, as question = answer. |
| ⌘K | All of the above, plus Refresh Exchange Rates on a money answer. |
When something can't be answered, the card says why instead (for example "No exchange rate for MXN." or "Cannot convert Weight to Length."), and ↵ copies nothing.
Math
The usual operators, brackets and functions work, with or without spaces.
| Type | Answer |
|---|---|
2+2*3 | 8 |
2^10 or 2**10 | 1,024 |
sqrt(16) + 10% | 4.4 |
square root of 625 | 25 |
5! | 120 |
10 mod 3 | 1 |
sin(30deg) | 0.5 |
round(3.14159,2) | 3.14 |
average of 10, 20, 30 | 20 |
10k + 500 | 10,500 |
1.5e3 | 1,500 |
Functions include sqrt, cbrt, log2, exp, round, floor, ceil, trunc, sign, min, max, sum, hypot and the trigonometric ones (sin, asin, sinh and so on). The constants pi, e, tau and phi are known.
Percentages, tips and ratios
| Type | Answer |
|---|---|
20% of 450 | 90 |
450 + 20% | 540 |
20% off 80 | 64 |
50 as % of 200 | 25% |
30 is 20% of what | 150 |
15% tip on $42 | $48.30, with the tip ($6.30) under it |
ratio of 1920 to 1080 | 16 : 9 |
Number bases
Convert to and from hexadecimal, binary and octal: 255 to hex gives 0xFF, 255 to binary gives 0b11111111, 0xff gives 255, and 1234 * 5678 in hex works too.
Units
Write a quantity and the unit you want with to, in or ->. Length, weight, volume, temperature, area, speed, time, data, pressure, angles, fuel economy and more are covered.
| Type | Answer |
|---|---|
10ft in m | 3.048 m |
5 m/s to km/h | 18 km/h |
5 feet 3 inches to cm | 160.02 cm |
10kg + 500g to lb | 23.14853753 lb |
1 cup to ml | 236.5882365 mL |
100 Mbps to MB/s | 12.5 MB/s |
15 km/l to mpg | 35.2821875 mpg |
55h in workdays | 6.875 workdays (8 hours each) |
A quantity on its own converts to a common counterpart (20 celsius answers in °F, 10 pounds in kg). Two unit names on their own give one of the first in the second: hr min is 60 min, m to ft is 3.280839895 ft.
Currency
Use codes, symbols or names: 50 GBP in euros, €20 to GBP, $100 to yen, 400K xof in €. You can add amounts in different currencies ($10 + €5), and the answer is in the last one. Common cryptocurrencies such as BTC and XRP convert the same way.
An amount on its own, like €50, answers in your Mac's own currency (from Language & Region). The labels under the card name both currencies with their codes, so you can see which one a word like "pesos" or "krona" was taken to mean.
Live rates
Rates come from Coinbase, checked against the European Central Bank's reference rates, and refresh every 6 hours while the calculator is on. Until the first refresh lands (or when you're offline) Saiki uses a dated set of rates that ships with the app.
A money answer says when its rates are from, at the bottom right of the card ("Rates from today at 9:41 AM"). Rates older than three days are marked "out of date". To fetch them now, press ⌘K on the card and choose Refresh Exchange Rates.
Time zones
| Type | What you get |
|---|---|
time in tokyo | The time there now. |
what time is it in london | The same, in plain words. |
3pm in Tokyo | Your 3 PM in Tokyo, marked "(tomorrow)" or "(yesterday)" when the day changes. |
12pm here in london | here and local mean your Mac's own time zone. |
5pm london in sf | From one place to another, neither of them yours. |
5pm london in sf + 2h | Shifted by a duration. |
diff paris | The time there and how far ahead or behind you it is. |
Cities, countries (time in uk, time in japan), zone abbreviations (cet, ist) and airport codes (lhr, nrt) all work. A country with several time zones answers with its capital's or main city's, and the label says which city it used. Clock times follow your Mac's 12- or 24-hour setting.
Dates
| Type | What you get |
|---|---|
today, tomorrow, now | The date (and time), with the weekday under it. |
today + 3 weeks | A date three weeks from now. |
3 days ago | A date in the past. |
today + 5 business days | Skips weekends. workdays and weekdays work too. |
days till 9april | How many days until then. |
days since 9jul | How many days since then. |
hrs till 9am | Hours until a time today. |
jul 4 - today | The difference between two dates. |
unix 0 to date | A Unix timestamp as a date. |
1970-01-01T00:00:00Z to unix | A date as a Unix timestamp (to unix ms for milliseconds). |
A month or weekday on its own (july, monday) stays a search.
Numbers in your format
The calculator reads and writes numbers the way your Mac does in System Settings → General → Language & Region. If your Mac uses a comma for decimals, type 2,5 * 4; separate function arguments with ; in that case. ↵ copies the number without its grouping separators, so it pastes cleanly into other apps.
Settings
Open Settings → Calculator.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Calculator (switch at the top) | Turns the calculator, its rate refreshes and the developer text tools off. Off, no card appears. |
| Answers → Try | A few examples to type. |
| Answers → Developer text tools | The cards for JSON, base64, ids and the rest. See Developer text tools. |
