System commands
Lock, sleep, restart, empty the Trash, eject your disks, flip Mac switches and move between Desktops by typing a few letters.
Run one
Type part of a command's name, like lock, empty trash or dark mode, and press ↵. Switches show what they're set to now beside the name, for example "System · Dark" on Toggle System Appearance. The bar closes and the command runs; when its effect isn't visible, a short message says what happened.
Commands that can lose work or can't be undone ask on a card first. Press ⌘↵ to go ahead or esc to cancel.
Every command can have its own hotkey on Settings → Hotkeys, in the System Controls section. A command with a card still shows it.
The commands
Power and session
| Command | Notes |
|---|---|
| Lock Screen | Asks first. Locks at once, like the system shortcut. |
| Sleep | Asks first. |
| Sleep Displays | Turns the displays off; the Mac keeps running. |
| Start Screen Saver | |
| Hibernate | Asks first, then macOS asks for your password. Memory is saved to disk and the Mac powers down; it wakes where you left off, and your usual sleep mode comes back after. |
| Restart | Asks first. Keeps your "Reopen windows when logging back in" choice. |
| Shut Down | Asks first. Same as Restart. |
| Log Out | Asks first. |
Apps with unsaved changes may ask you to save. The first time you restart, shut down or log out from Saiki, macOS asks whether Saiki may control System Events.
Trash and disks
| Command | Notes |
|---|---|
| Empty Trash | Asks first. The card measures the Trash and says how many items (and how much) are deleted for good. This can't be undone. |
| Open Trash | Opens the Trash in Finder. |
| Eject All Disks | Asks first. See below. |
Empty Trash goes through Finder, so macOS asks once whether Saiki may control Finder.
Switches
| Command | Notes |
|---|---|
| Toggle System Appearance | Light or dark, everywhere at once. |
| Toggle Hidden Files | Shows or hides hidden files in Finder. Finder restarts to apply it. |
| Toggle Desktop Icons | Shows or hides the icons on your desktop. Finder restarts. |
| Toggle Stage Manager | |
| Toggle Low Power Mode | macOS asks for your password each time. |
Apps and windows
| Command | Notes |
|---|---|
| Show Desktop | Moves the windows aside, as the system's Show Desktop does. |
| Hide All Apps Except Frontmost | Keeps the app you were in. |
| Unhide All Hidden Apps | |
| Quit All Applications | Asks first, naming the apps. Finder and Saiki stay. Apps with unsaved changes ask you to save. |
| Dismiss Notifications | Closes the banners and stacks in Notification Center. |
For window positions and sizes, see Window management. For brightness, Night Shift and mirroring, see Displays.
Eject All Disks
Eject All Disks ejects every external or removable disk that's mounted. Before you confirm, the card looks for what has files open on each disk and names it, for example "In use by Preview (open file: Report.pdf). Quit it first, or the eject is refused." If no disk is mounted, the card says so.
To keep a disk mounted every time, such as a backup drive that's always plugged in, go to Settings → System Commands, the Eject All Leaves These Alone card, and choose Ignore a Disk…. Type the disk's name, its volume UUID or its mount path; the form lists the disks mounted now. Press ↵ on an ignored disk to edit it, or ⌘⌫ to remove it from the list.
Spaces and Desktops
These switch Desktops at once, without the sliding animation:
- Next Desktop and Previous Desktop, shown when you have more than one Space.
- Switch to Desktop 1 through Switch to Desktop 9, shown only for Desktops you have.
They act on the display under the pointer. Desktop numbers count only Desktops, not full-screen apps, in Mission Control's order. Switching needs the Accessibility permission. If you're already at the end, a message says so.
Name your Desktops
- Open Settings → Spaces. The Your Desktops card lists every Desktop on every display.
- Press ↵ on one, type a name like "Mail" and save. Leave it empty to clear it, or press ⌘⌫ (Clear Name) on the row.
The name then shows beside Switch to Desktop 2 in the bar, along with "Current" on the one you're on, and typing the name finds the command. Names stay with the Desktop when you restart.
Keep Spaces in a fixed order
macOS normally rearranges your Spaces by which you used last. Keep Spaces in a Fixed Order turns that off so Desktop 2 is always the same Desktop. Run the command, or use Keep Spaces in a fixed order in the Order card on Settings → Spaces.
It asks on a card both ways, because the Dock restarts to apply it (your windows stay where they are). Turning it off puts back the setting you had. If you turn rearranging back on yourself in System Settings, Saiki leaves your choice alone, and a setting set by your organisation's profile is never changed.
